The heart of Livorno is the La Venezia district, or more precisely the La Venezia Nuova district, a charming, bohemian, lively area that, with its canals, small bridges, characteristic alleys, and the striking Fortezza Nuova in the background, evokes the enchanting atmosphere of the lagoon city.
In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Venezia district expanded, with numerous buildings being erected, including the Bottini dell'Olio—ancient warehouses for oil storage, now home to the City Museum and the Labronica Library—, the Palazzo delle Colonne di Marmo, Palazzo Huigens, and the Palazzo del Monte di Pietà, as well as religious buildings like the Church of San Francesco and Santa Caterina.
The most important event is EFFETTO VENEZIA, usually held during the first week of August. This festival, set against the magical backdrop of illuminated canals, combines music, performances, culture, and gastronomy.
The setups of the local bars and restaurants, with tables and outdoor kitchens filling the streets of the district, are particularly charming and atmospheric.
