Pontino San Marco, two names for a single neighborhood, born and remaining popular, a spark and driving force of all the battles for freedom and democracy that Livorno has fought through the centuries of revolutions and rights.
Originally called Borgo Reale, Pontino was one of the first neighborhoods to emerge at the end of the 18th century outside the Buontalenti Pentagon; the route will take you through the Scali delle Cantine, the more inner and unknown streets, the ancient, now vanished cemeteries, and much more.
In every turning point in Livorno's history, Pontino San Marco has been the spark. The flames of the Risorgimento, the insurrections of the early 20th century.
A neighborhood that has always been lively, dotted with artisanal workshops of vanished trades and cellars serving "good wine," it finds its fullest expression on Scali Delle Cantine, where colorful houses line up and reflect in the water of the canal.
